The month of April was characterized by large amounts of rain. It was a real baptismal regeneration (since the Easter holidays) and caused flooding in our state of Maranhão, breaks roads and communications. With regard to our mission with few paved roads full of potholes and the muddy unpaved and rubbish a major problem has been constantly bringing the cars to be repaired. The bad weather should last until July, though with less intensity.
The work is there.
parish life and many based on 'autonomy for the laity in our task of priests is more related to the educational dimension and the celebration of the sacraments and general coordination.
D 'on the other hand the social dimension of poverty requires a special commitment to social projects (vocational training, reinforcement education, health education, ...).
Don Luca is particularly busy at the diocesan level with the prison ministry and Rev. Daniel as always at the diocesan pastoral coordinator. Don Orazio charitable follows some dimensions of need such as hospitals, disabled persons, cases of extreme poverty.
Annechini The family is learning the language. Paul is organizing courses on video-communication at the diocesan level. Luisa is integrated into the various social projects of the parish. But their main task is to be "fellow travelers" as a family in the midst of so many families deconstructed.
The political contradictions:
The governor of our state of Maranhão was ousted after two years for electoral fraud and took over an exponent of the family oligarchy that ruled the state for the past 40 years. The same happened in other Brazilian states where families have taken over the historic oligarchic power through judicial processes. All this speaks volumes about the powers that govern almost always and the virtual impossibility of real political alternatives.
A sign of hope :
On 18 April I attended an ecumenical celebration in the District headquarters in our neighborhood. It is the first time that happens, since I was in Brazil, in our neighborhood, which has many and varied Christian denominations. In the name of common social problems must be greater religious unity, not only as a political or social, but because faith in the God of Jesus Christ leads naturally to a unit of fraternity and sharing. Here the ecumenical dimension is very different from Europe and the religious syncretism seems to be a natural fact. The acceptance of diversity takes on an almost resigned and this prevents a true conversion from either side. All influenced by strong emotion and great scope for competition. A welcome presence
